Sarah and Clayton County neighbor, Niki, have shared the common bonds of maternity; little did they know they would also share the birth of their children. It is an experienced and talented author who can take the realities of life and color them with humor!
With her large belly in the way, she could barely reach her coffee cup sitting on the edge. Lamenting her fate, Sarah was anxious to deliver her baby, going on two weeks late. And the phone ringing made it worse. She had to move.
“Sarah! It’s coming! It’s coming!”
“You’ve got labor pains now?”
“Okay, Okay, You do.”
“At a sales meeting. I called. He knows.”
“Damn, Kent’s on a service call. I can do it! Wait right there, I’ll be over to get you.”
“What? Are you crazy?” Niki screamed as another labor pain hit.
Niki was in the garage when she arrived, her coat fitting no better than Sarah’s.
“Oh God, it hurts to move Sarah,” Niki complained.
“I know honey. Give me your hand and I’ll try to help you in. The women struggled together. Sarah pulling Niki’s arm. Niki pushing the door frame with her feet. Sarah grunted. Niki squealed, and with one huge push Niki lurched into the truck landing sprawled across the seat with her head in Sarah’s lap.”
Sarah looked at Niki lying across the seat and started to giggle.
“Ugh!” Groaned Niki. “What’s so damned funny?”
“Niki, you look like a bowling pin that got knocked down. Do you think if I pushed your head you’d roll up straight?”
“Sarah, just go. Please,” Niki said with a sigh of exhaustion.
Sarah bucked the truck with the clutch to swing Niki’s door closed, then drove faster than she should to the hospital’s emergency entrance.
