The day’s practice round for the Tradition golf tournament was coming to an end as I started spraying the 18th fairway with liquid fertilizer. I stayed beyond the 250 yard marker just so that late golfers wouldn’t tee off and hit me. At that very moment a golf ball rolled down the middle of the fairway past my sprayer.
Just as I thought. There are still golfers out here. That drive was pretty good.
I continued my spray pattern on the fairway. As I turned and drove away from the tee again a golf ball rolled right along the right side of my sprayer. I’ve had my equipment hit by golf balls before, and this was really close.
I looked back at the men on the tee and saw them high fiving one man. He seemed familiar so I took stared harder. I recognized him. He was professional golfer Mark Calcavecchia, a real wise guy.
Well, I’m not going to be a part of his game. I decided to leave the fairway as soon as I reached the end.
A golf ball rebounded off the back of my spray tank and bounced into the fairway.
I knew it! I knew he was trying to hit me.
I wanted to just punch him for doing that. He’s just a big shot golfer making fun of an ordinary golf course worker. Angrily I turned to see what he was doing this time, and he had his hand out collecting money from the bet he just won.
What made me even madder was the probability that the bet was for more money than I make in a week.
